The Eastern Union has solicited the support of the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, HRM Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu, towards the group’s quest to foster unity and strengthen political discourse among the people of the South-East and South-South regions of Nigeria.

According to EU, the two regions were under the Old Eastern Region before their division, hence they should maintain their oneness.

EU gave the task on Tuesday when it conferred the Eastern Union Exemplary Leadership Award on the traditional ruler. The event held at his Edem-Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The National President of the group, Hon Charles Anike, represented by the Enugu State leader of EU, Comrade Reality Cosmas, said the award was in recognition of the traditional ruler’s philanthropy and good leadership of the traditional institution in Enugu State and beyond.

According to him, “The traditional ruler’s human relations credentials are yet unsurpassed among his contemporaries. He empowers the youths and provides succour to the needy. He feeds multitudes without blinking an eyelid. His philanthropic gestures began from home, and echoes across the South-East. Igwe Asadu stands beyond others with humility and serving humanity in all spheres.”

EU’s South-East Zonal Coordinator, Mr Chineme Agu, praised the royal father for being a model of unity. He said EU’s thrust was to unify both regions to enable them to have a common platform in propagating their collective welfare at the national level.

According to him, EU “advocates true federalism in Nigeria to enable each region to develop according to their respective comparative advantages” as well as “driving the campaign to make many of our entrepreneurs, both within and in the diaspora, to invest in Igbo land to develop our place”.

The state women’s leader, Mrs Ugwuanyi, and a think-tank of EU, Prince Chibueze Onah, extolled Igwe Asadu’s generosity. They mentioned some of his gestures as free medical care for the good health of the people, scholarships for students and construction of houses for the poor. They recalled that the traditional ruler recently donated N12m for the renovation of his alma mater, Community High School, Okpo, in Igboeze North LGA of the state.

Responding, Igwe Asadu commended EU for its philosophy of unifying the Old Eastern Region. He charged them to be ambassadors of peace not only in the Old Eastern Region, but the entire Nigeria.

According to him, “I’ve always championed the good of mankind. EU is a good project. I task the people of the Old Eastern Region to be united. Many other organisations have this unification of the Old Eastern Region as an agenda, but for me, EU has come with the passion. EU should be the vanguard of making our youths embrace peace, egalitarianism and respect for elders. Nigeria is our own, and we must support initiatives to make Nigeria great.”

EU is a pressure group whose members are drawn from South-East and South-South regions of Nigeria. They advocate equity and justice in Nigeria.
