Errani, Paolini Win French Open Doubles Title
Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini defeated Kazakh Anna Danilina and Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 to win the women’s doubles title at the French Open on Sunday.
It would be recalled that Errani and Paolini won the Olympic doubles title on the same court last year for Italy, and they picked up from where they stopped with a dominant display to emerge as champions.
The match lasted for two hours and 15 minutes as they became the first Italians to win the Roland Garros women’s doubles title since Errani teamed with Roberta Vinci in 2012.
It was Paolini’s first Grand Slam title after losing two singles finals last year.
It was Sara Errani’s second title this week after winning the French Open mixed doubles title with teammate Andrea Vavassori. She has now won eight Grand Slam titles across mixed and women’s doubles.
Paolini and Errani are currently on an 11-match winning streak, which helped them to win Italy’s fifth Billie Jean King Cup triumph in Málaga, Spain.
Errani was delighted to win the French Open doubles title, describing it as the best thing in the world.
She said, “It’s hard for me to put into words. Jasmine, you bring positive energy every day, and that’s what makes you special. I am so happy to experience these moments with you. Our team: you make us laugh so much every day, and we have a great time together.
“We are so fortunate to have all of you in our lives. It’s tough because tennis never stops. In Rome, I experienced many beautiful things, and here I also won the mixed doubles. But you can never stop to celebrate; maybe you can’t fully appreciate what’s happening. Now I want to try to realise what we have done; winning a Slam was truly incredible, the best thing in the world.”
Paolini hailed Errani for inspiring her to her first Grand Slam title.
She said, “You are really an inspiration for me. It’s great to have you in my team and sharing these moments with you; it’s something special. You are a legend to me.”
In the men’s doubles final, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos secured their first major title together with a 6-0, 6-7 (5), 7-5 victory over British duo Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.
