EPL: VAR may be used to check yellow cards, corner kicks

The head of Premier League referees, Howard Webb, has claimed that the use of the Video Assistant Referee, VAR, could be expanded to yellow cards and corner kicks.

This comes amid the current review of VAR being carried out by the International Football Association Board, IFAB, who are regarded as football law-makers.

As it stands, VAR is only used to review goals, straight red cards, penalties and mistaken identity.

But Webb told BBC Sport: “If you are talking about yellow cards that are delivered incorrectly which could be impactful on the game, then you also have to think about wrongly not-issued yellow cards.

“I understand the impact of a wrongly awarded corner that’s clearly wrong – easy to see on video – and the impact of a wrongly issued yellow card.”

He added that there will be consultations “with the English game as well.”
