EPL explains why Chelsea’s Fofana escaped conceding penalty against West Ham

The Premier League has explained why West Ham were not awarded a penalty in the first half of their match against Chelsea in Saturday’s early kick-off.

The Hammers conceded two early goals, which were converted by Nicolas Jackson in the opening 18 minutes of the game.

But they were denied what seems a stonewall penalty, which could have halved the deficit.

In the 28th minute, Wesley Fofana dragged Crysencio Summerville back inside the penalty area.

Contact was initiated outside the box but appeared to continue before Summerville hit the deck

Referee Samuel Barrott waved play on and his decision was upheld by the VAR.

The Premier League quickly cleared up the confusion by tweeting an explanation that read: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by Fofana on Summerville is checked and confirmed by VAR – deeming that this was not sustained holding.”
