Enugu Ready For 2026 National Sports Festival – Commissioner
The Commissioner for Sports Development, Enugu State, Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, has declared the state’s readiness to host the 2026 edition of the National Sports Festival.
Coal City will host the 22nd edition of the games next year, and the commissioner is confident that they will do better than Ogun State.
The 2024 Gateway Games concluded on Thursday with Delta State emerging winners for the fifth consecutive time to maintain their dominance in the games.
Attention now shifts to the next edition in Enugu next year, but Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu said the state governor is ready to host a world-class event.
He said, “The Gateway Games 2024 has indeed raised the bar, but Enugu will take it a level higher to deliver what will be the best National Sports Festival ever.
“Governor Peter Mbah’s administration is fully committed to organising a world-class event that will be a reference point for many years to come.”
Ike Ekweremadu said the state has put in place the necessary sports facilities while expressing plans to renovate the older ones.
He said, “Enugu is blessed with numerous historical sites that continue to attract tourists from within and outside the country. We will use the Coal City Games to further position the state as a cultural and tourism hub.
“We are the only state in Africa with the highest number of security cameras. Enugu is fully covered, and our people are peace-loving and hospitable.”
Enugu State finished 23rd with one gold, seven silver, and eight bronze for a total of 16 medals.
