Enugu LGA Revokes Road Contract Over Poor Delivery

The Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Mr Aka Eze Aka, has revoked the contract for the construction of Ukwu Akpu–Obollo Afor market link road following the contractor’s failure to meet expectations.

THE WHISTLER gathered that the revocation was effected on Tuesday when the council chairman toured some ongoing infrastructural projects within the Obollo-Afor market axis.

Mr Eze, at the site of the Ukwu Akpu–Obollo Afor Market link road, expressed dissatisfaction with the level of work executed by the contracting firm. According to him, the pace and quality of the job had fallen below agreed contractual standards.

Quoting him, “The work done here is far below the expectations of the council and the people. There is no room for mediocrity in our development agenda. The contract is hereby revoked and will be re-awarded to a more competent firm with the capacity to deliver quality results promptly.”

He said the time set for the completion of the road had not been met “due to unjustifiable delays and technical flaws that failed basic integrity checks”.

In another development, the chairman has commended the contractor handling the Obollo Ag’ag’ Roundabout reconstruction. The project, it was gathered, was to reflect the town’s emerging urban landscape. Eze said the contractor adhered to project specifications and prompt delivery timelines.

“This is exactly what we envisioned when we awarded this project. Urbanization demands quality aesthetics and functionality. I commend the contractor for doing justice to this monument,” he said.

He therefore charged the local government town engineer, Engr Valentine Onyishi, to remain vigilant and continue exercising his oversight duties diligently.

“Inspection should not be ceremonial. You must ensure that every project reflects the value for public funds. The people of Udenu deserve nothing less,” he added.

Some traders, who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday, commended the chairman for touring the projects. They also charged him to sanction erring contractors as well as council engineers who compromise in quality control.

A trader, Emeka Eze, said, “This is a signal to contractors that the tide has changed. Before, contracts were awarded and abandoned. It was corruption. This revocation means a lot to us. It shows accountability and honest desire for quality service delivery.”

Moses Adon, a foodstuff seller, charged engineers attached to the LGA to rise to the challenge.

According to him, “Let the engineers employed or engaged by the local government be interrogated. It indicts them that contracts are being executed contrary to specifications. We expect the chairman to extend the same stick to other erring contractors.”
