Enugu: Labour Party Set To Collapse Into PDP In Udenu LGA

Thousands of members of the Labour Party in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State will Tuesday decamp to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, THE WHISTLER can confirm.

The meeting ratifying the decamping was held on Monday. Udenu is the local government of former Governor of Enugu State, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Incumbent Deputy Governor of the state, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai, is also from Udenu.

“Yes, most of LP members will rejoin PDP tomorrow,” said a member of the PDP in the LGA. “LP almost ended the life of PDP in Enugu State. Gov Peter Mbah’s good administration is the cause of their returning to the PDP. They were in PDP before, so it’s a re-union.”

During the 2023 general elections, LP sprang surprises in Enugu State, winning two Senate seats, seven House of Representatives, and a majority in the state House of Assembly.

A high rate of decamping had nonetheless hit LP in the state, including becoming the minority in the state Assembly with only about three members out of its hitherto fourteen.

Its guber candidate, Barr Chijioke Edeoga, about a month ago joined PDP.

However, the lawmaker representing Igboeze South LGA in the state Assembly, Mr Harrison Ogara, had earlier told THE WHISTLER that the gale of defection of LP lawmakers to other parties in the state would not negatively affect the strength of LP in 2027 polls.

According to him, “The people who made the Labour Party strong during the 2023 elections are still around.” He challenged INEC to conduct free and fair elections to determine true voting wills of the Nigerian electorate.
