Enugu East Enrolls 5,000 Elderly In Free Health Insurance
…Supports 758 Students With Bursaries
The Chairman of Enugu East Council Area of Enugu State, Mr. Beloved-Dan Anike, says the Council has enrolled 5,000 elderly for the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) aimed at providing affordable healthcare service delivery.
Anike stated this when News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Enugu Office, paid him courtesy visit at his office on Thursday in Enugu.
NAN reports that the UHC is aimed to ensure that all residents in the state have access to essential, quality healthcare services without financial hardship.
This includes a full spectrum of services from health promotion to treatment and rehabilitation.
He added that the council had launched the onboarding of 5,000 residents of Enugu East into the Universal Health coverage free of charge.
According to him, the council signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Enugu State UHC where they paid them quarterly.
The council boss explained that the health coverage was targeted for elderly persons between 60 years and above as well as women within the childbearing age to access free healthcare services.
“Enugu State Government is doing type 2 primary healthcare centres across the 260 wards in the state and due to huge number in some wards within the 12 wards in Enugu East, we are building type one health centres.
“We designed five of them but currently, work is ongoing in four of them. This is to complement the type two primary health centres the state government is building,” he said.
Anike said that the council registered 758 undergraduates for bursary awards to enable them meet up with the economic challenges. He also disclosed that the council had launched “One Youth One Skill” programme where 180 graduates and 1,000 youths would be trained to acquire special skills.
Anike further said the council integrated Greater Tomorrow Scholarship Scheme targeted at 1,000 students.
“Out of these students, we have some that we are paying their school fees up to N1, 000,000 and I promised to pay their school fees before my tenure ends.
“The council is also empowering 200 women groups where they have access to funds without collateral but we register them as a group.
“Our target is to create jobs, grow economy and improve livelihood of the people and residents of Enugu East Council Area,” Anike said.
