Eguavoen, Awoniyi Target Maximum Points Against Benin Republic

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi is confident that the Super Eagles will grab the maximum points in the 2025 Nations Cup qualifiers clash against Benin Republic on Sunday.

The Super Eagles, under the tutelage of Austine Eguavoen, have a date against Benin Republic in Uyo on Saturday, and they will also take on Tuesday in Kigali.

Awoniyi believes the team possesses enough quality to win all their matches starting from the clash against Benin Republic.

He said, “For us, it is something big when it comes to playing for the Super Eagles. I think we have what it takes to win every game in Africa.

“It is just about putting everything together and playing for the country with pride.”

The Nottingham Forest striker is making a return to the team after a 10-month absence, and he is delighted to be back to represent his fatherland.

He said, “I can say it is an opportunity to play for the Super Eagles and a great privilege for that matter for every one of us.

“Everyone called up is excited about it and I believe each and everyone is going to give their best for the country,”

Similarly, Super Eagles interim coach, Austine Eguavoen has urged the team to go all out for maximum points against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

He said, “Our objective is clear: to collect six points from both matches. The players are well aware of this, and they’re fully committed. Qualifiers are never easy, and every team wants to be at the AFCON finals, but we’ve spoken to the squad, and we’re all on the same page,”

The Super Eagles lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers in June, Eguavoen said the team is not thinking about a revenge.

He said, “No one is talking about revenge. Our sole focus is on getting three points against Benin Republic on Saturday, and then another three points in Kigali on Tuesday. These victories will set us on the right path towards qualification.”

The match against Benin Republic is slated for 5pm Nigerian time at the Godswil Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
