The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 31 individuals, including four Chinese, for alleged illegal mining activities in Jos, Plateau State.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the arrests were made on Saturday on the premises of Jiasheng Nigeria Limited, located in Dura Rayfield, Mangu Road, Jos.

Oyewale disclosed that the operation followed credible intelligence linking the company to illegal mining operations in the region.

Among the suspects are 27 Nigerians, some of whom are alleged to be suppliers found in possession of unprocessed solid minerals suspected to have been illegally mined.

During the operation, the EFCC recovered substantial exhibits, including a truck loaded with eight bags of processed monazite, a valuable mineral used in various industrial applications.

The bags reportedly weighed a total of 1,000 kilograms, with an estimated value of N4 million each.

“The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” Oyewale stated.

The EFCC emphasised its commitment to combating illegal mining activities, which have been detrimental to Nigeria’s economy and environmental sustainability.

He said that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
