Education Minister Announces Plans To Revive National Library Project

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa has stated that the ministry is working tirelessly to ensure contractors are mobilised to begin work on the abandoned national library project before the end of the third quarter of 2025.

The former Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had promised in 2023 that the library will be completed in 2025.

The project was first awarded in 2006 to Reynolds Construction at the cost of N8.5bn.

The Federal Government re-awarded the project in March 2010 for 21 months at the cost of N49.6bn, but the building is yet to be completed, several years after.

Alausa who posted on his X platform on Thursday assured that he had met up with a committee set up to finalise the project to map out a clear completion strategy.

“As part of Mr President’s goal for human capital development in education, health, and social protection, and to ensure the completion of all abandoned projects that meet our needs, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT, GCFR, has directed us, the Ministers of Education, to complete the abandoned National Library Project in Abuja, which is intended to serve as a national landmark for our capital city.

“Last year, we established a committee of stakeholders to finalise this project. This week, the Minister of State @Suwaiba_Said and I had a follow-up meeting with the committee to map out a clear completion strategy, focusing on mobilising the contractors to the site before the end of the third quarter of 2025.

“This President is dedicated to improving our human capital index and completing key infrastructure projects like the National Library,” he said.
