Edo NAWOJ urges support for elderly care

By Ozioruva Aliu

BENIN CITY — The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called on individuals, corporate organisations and government institutions to make deliberate provisions for the care and welfare of the elderly.

The Chairperson of NAWOJ in Edo State, Comrade Habiba Sam, made the appeal during a visit to the Catholic Home of the Elderly at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City. The visit formed part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), during which the association presented food items and toiletries to residents of the facility.

This year’s International Women’s Day celebration by the association was held under the theme, “Give to Gain.”

Speaking during the visit, Comrade Sam said the gesture was aimed at showing love and compassion to elderly members of society, particularly those in care homes.

“We are pleased to be in your presence to mark this year’s celebration with you, knowing that you are in your twilight years when you may not often receive visitors. We hope our visit brings hope and fond memories, gladdens your hearts and makes this day remarkable for us all,” she said.

Responding on behalf of the Directress of the home, Rev. Sister Gloria Ochei, the caregiver, Mrs. Rose John, expressed appreciation to the association for the visit and the gifts presented to the residents.

She appealed to the women journalists to use their professional platforms to raise awareness about the existence of the facility and the needs of its residents.

“I plead with you to help us spread the message that there is a home like this where elderly people are being cared for. The Archbishop of Benin currently sponsors their welfare, including medical care, but we still appeal to well-meaning Nigerians to support the home,” she said.

Mrs. John also thanked the association for choosing the facility as part of its International Women’s Day activities and prayed for God’s blessings upon the members.

In an emotional moment during the visit, the eldest resident of the home, Mrs. Comfort Solomon, aged 111, offered prayers and blessings for the journalists in appreciation of their kindness.

The items donated, which included foodstuffs and toiletries, are expected to provide additional comfort and support for the residents of the home.
