Edeoga’s Move To PDP Ended Opposition In Enugu- Ex-PAC Chairman
The former national chairman of the Progressives Action Congress (PAC), Chief Charles Agadenyi Nwodo, on Thursday, said the recent decamping of the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu State, Hon Chijioke Edeoga, to the Peoples Democratic Party had erased the possibility of any strong political opposition in the state.
According to him, Enugu State has never had any opposition since 1999, adding that the only period the state witnessed strong opposition was during the 2023 general elections when LP sprang a surprise.
Quoting him, “There has been no strong opposition in Enugu State for a very long time, except in the last general election when the Labour Party sprang a surprise attack on the PDP.
“Since then, and from history, there has not been any strong opposition. It is a matter of power sharing and recognition, and so on.
“Edeoga’s decamping is not new. He must have known the interest he has at heart for his people. If he believes that through PDP, he would realise his aims and objectives in politics for his people, that is not bad.
“Nigerian politics has no clear-cut division on party ideologies. It is a matter of either personal interest or collective interest.”
He said efforts by some ideologists to make a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s politics failed because “the Nigerian electorate believes in money politics.”
He emphasised that “some of us who tried to practice ideological politics were left behind because Nigerians have not woken up. They believe in sharing money as a means of voting and of recognising who is in power.
“We have made a lot of sacrifices for them to realise that through ideologies, democracy will sustain the test of time, and also the power sharing will be equitably done. But when you have no checks and balances, there is a problem ahead.
“It ignites dictatorship and oppression. We have been living in that condition for a very long time. May God help us so that with time we have a good foot on the ground to build a better democracy.”
Edeoga, a former spokesman of the House of Representatives, was received back into the PDP fold on Tuesday by Gov Peter Mbah. Edeoga had left PDP and contested the state governor race against Mbah in 2023.
LP, with him as the leader in the state, won the majority of seats in the state assembly and clinched eight House of Representatives seats as well as two senatorial seats.
