Eagle Square Quiet As Tinubu Supporters, Security Men Occupy Protest Venue
The much-anticipated Democracy Day protest in Abuja failed to take off on schedule on Thursday, as security forces and President Bola Tinubu’s supporters took control of the Eagle Square protest venue.
Despite mobilisation efforts by the #TakeItBackMovement, protest activity was absent for more than two hours after the planned 8:00 a.m. schedule.
THE WHISTLER reports that as of 10:30 a.m., the area remained calm, with heavily armed security personnel stationed at key entry points.
Supporters of President Tinubu, many carrying placards, were seen gathered around Eagle Square.
Our correspondent’s checks at other rally points, including Unity Fountain, National Stadium, and Utako Market, revealed similar scenes.
The #TakeItBackMovement had announced plans to hold demonstrations across more than 20 states, citing growing hardship, insecurity, and shrinking civic freedoms.
“June 12 represents an opportunity for Nigerians to peacefully demand good governance and accountability,” said Juwon Sanyaolu, national coordinator of the movement.
“The constitution clearly states that the welfare and security of the people are the primary duties of government—duties which this administration has failed to fulfill,” he added.
Meanwhile, at the National Assembly, security forces blocked protesters from entering the complex ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s planned joint session with lawmakers at noon.
