DSS Moves to Deactivate Sowore’s X Account After Tinubu “Criminal” Comment

The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally requested that social media platform X deactivate activist Omoyele Sowore’s verified profile following his characterisation of President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in late August.

A correspondence dated September 6 and signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the Director-General outlined the agency’s concerns about the social media post’s potential impact on public order and national reputation.

“The said tweet is still in circulation and has attracted widespread condemnation by the majority of Nigerians, some of whom may resort to unwholesome activities… especially supporters of the President who have started taking to the streets in protest, thereby creating political tension and threatening the country’s national security,” the letter stated.

The security service characterised Sowore’s statement as containing “misleading information, online harassment, hate speech, and a wilful attempt to cause disunity and damage Nigeria’s image.” The agency referenced various legal frameworks, including criminal legislation, cybercrime statutes, and anti-terrorism laws, to suggest the post could constitute “domestic terrorism.”

X Corporation received an ultimatum to comply within one day or potentially face severe consequences, with officials warning that both the platform and the activist might face criminal prosecution.
