A hospital in southern Israel and residential areas near Tel Aviv came under heavy missile fire from Iran early Thursday, leaving at least 47 people injured.
The Israeli government confirmed that Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba sustained a direct hit, alongside multiple residential buildings in Ramat Gan and Holon, two towns located near the coastal hub of Tel Aviv.
The strikes triggered sirens across central and southern Israel, prompting chaos as civilians rushed to shelters.
In a strong-worded post on X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Iran’s leadership for what he described as a deliberate strike on civilians and critical infrastructure.
“This morning, Iran’s terrorist dictators fired missiles at Soroka Hospital… and at civilians in the centre of the country. We will make the tyrants in Tehran pay a heavy price,” Netanyahu said.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the strikes as “some of the most serious war crimes” and directly accused Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of being responsible.“He will be held accountable for his crimes,” Katz said.
According to Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) rescue service, 47 people were wounded in total — three of them in serious condition and two in moderate condition.
An additional 42 sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and blast trauma, while 18 others were hurt while attempting to reach shelters.
A spokesperson for Soroka Hospital reported damage to the building and surrounding areas.
“We are currently assessing the full extent of the damage and injuries. We urge the public not to come to the hospital at this time,” he told AFP.
Footage from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from the complex, which also treats Israeli soldiers injured in Gaza. Explosions were heard in Jerusalem around 7:10 a.m. local time as Israel’s air defences responded to what the military said were “dozens of ballistic missiles” fired from Iran.
On their part, Israeli forces launched a series of targeted airstrikes overnight.
Forty Israeli Air Force fighter jets were deployed to bomb multiple military sites inside Iran, including a heavy water reactor facility in Arak, which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said housed critical infrastructure for plutonium production.
“We struck the structure that seals the reactor, which is essential to the process of producing nuclear-grade material, thus rendering it unusable for future weapons development,” an IDF spokesperson said.
Additional strikes were carried out on what Israel described as a “nuclear weapons development site” near Natanz, along with several military production facilities believed to support Iran’s missile and weapons programmes.
