Dormant Bitcoin Wallet Moves $649M After 6 Years of Silence

A long-inactive Bitcoin wallet surprised the crypto world on July 8 after transferring 6,000 BTC—now valued at over $649 million—following nearly six years of silence.

Blockchain monitoring platform Lookonchain reported that the wallet, first funded on July 25, 2019, had shown no signs of activity until the sudden transfer. At the time of the original deposit, Bitcoin was trading at roughly $9,796, placing the total stash’s value just under $59 million.

With Bitcoin prices now exceeding $108,000, the wallet’s contents have appreciated more than tenfold. The transfer was recorded at 10:39 UTC, corresponding to block height 904557. The BTC price at that time hovered around $108,207, resulting in an unrealised gain of approximately $590 million.

The transaction history shows that the wallet received two initial deposits—first, a modest 0.67 BTC for $9,671, followed by a much larger transfer of 5,999.33 BTC about two hours later. Since then, the wallet had remained dormant until the recent full transfer emptied the address.

As of now, the destination of the funds remains unknown. However, whale movements of this size typically spark speculation about whether the funds are being liquidated, shifted for security purposes, or moved to a custodial service.

The timing adds further intrigue, as institutional interest in Bitcoin has surged over the past few months. Reactivated dormant wallets have become more common, especially with BTC prices flirting with historic highs. Still, such major transfers remain rare, and when they happen, they draw considerable attention.

Whether this shift is a simple reallocation or the first sign of a larger move remains unclear, but it stands as one of the most notable whale actions of the year.
