Delta: Senator Dafinone appeals for peaceful resolution of Itsekiri, Urhobo conflict

The senator representing Delta Central senatorial district, Ede Dafinone, has appealed for calm and a peaceful resolution to the renewed crisis between the Itsekiri and Urhobo in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a statement personally signed and released on Tuesday, Senator Dafinone expressed deep concern over the situation and urged all parties to exercise restraint, shun violence, and embrace dialogue.

“At this critical time, I appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and shun any acts of violence. I further call on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly in de-escalating the situation and ensuring the safety of all communities,” he stated.

The lawmaker noted that both the Urhobo and Itsekiri have coexisted for decades as neighbours, bound by strong cultural, social, and economic ties that should not be destroyed by avoidable conflicts.

He condemned reported attacks on the Urhobo Progressive Union, UPU House at Okere-Urhobo, which also left some youths injured, describing the incident as “deeply regrettable.”

“The UPU represents the heritage and identity of the Urhobo people worldwide. An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation. I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he stressed.

Senator Dafinone further called on security agencies to remain neutral, fair, and proactive in maintaining peace, while prioritising dialogue, reconciliation, and trust-building.

He also urged traditional leaders, community elders, youth groups, and political actors to work collectively towards unity, peace, and mutual respect.

The lawmaker appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conclude the Supreme Court-ordered delineation exercise in Warri Federal Constituency, saying it would help resolve long-standing grievances and foster peaceful coexistence.

“Together, we can sustain the bonds of brotherhood and build a future anchored on justice and harmony,” he concluded.
