Defence Minister Directs CDS To Provide Security For Electricity Tower Repairs

The Minister of Defence, Muhammed Abubakar on Tuesday directed the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa to provide security for the repair of the electricity tower across the Northern region of the country.

The directive is a sequel to concerns raised by the 19 Northern Governors on Monday following
recently witnessed power cuts, throwing the region into darkness, paralysing business activities, and making the already difficult situation worse.

The minister noted that by providing security for the workers to repair this critical national infrastructure, the power outages across the North, causing significant disruptions to citizens’ lives will be a thing of the past.

“The goal is to prioritise the repairs and ensure the grid’s functionality for the benefit of all citizens.

“The Honourable Minister urges all Nigerians, particularly those in affected states, to remain patient and show understanding as efforts are underway to address the situation,” the minister said.

On Monday, Northern governors had expressed fears of a likely recurrence of hardship protests as witnessed in August.

Calls for the government to resolve the power challenge have not yielded the desired results thus eliciting fears that the situation may spiral out of control sooner than later.

They cited a lack of jobs for the youth, insecurity that has limited areas of business operations and farming thus exacerbating the difficult situation, hardship and hunger with painful inflation as likely catalysts that could push the youth, who are mostly using social media, to kick them out of offices.

Consequently, the governors challenged one another to urgently tackle these challenges in individual states to forestall any unrest.
