Cross River champions conservation of indigenous gorillas
The Cross River State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing the extinction of gorillas in its forests.
Experts have raised concerns over the fast-depleting population of gorillas.
The population of the animals is estimated at just 300. The depletion has been attributed to persistent hunting, bush burning and other human activities.
Speaking at the launch of the Boki Gorilla Carnival and Festival and the introduction of the Miss Wildlife Queen Beauty Pageant, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts, Mrs Eme Affiah, highlighted the state’s unique ecological richness.
“Our vast forests are home to rare wildlife species, including gorillas, which are a major tourism attraction,” she said.
“We don’t have to struggle to showcase our tourism sites. We have gorillas in abundance in Boki LGA—not just pictures, but real-life gorillas.
“We are a natural home to wildlife and game reserves.”
Affiah added that the government is actively supporting conservation groups and experts dedicated to wildlife protection, particularly gorilla conservation, due to its immense tourism potential.
Also speaking at the event, Senator Eteng Williams, who represents Cross River Central Senatorial District and served as chairman of the occasion, expressed his firm commitment to wildlife preservation, natural resource conservation, and community empowerment.
He emphasized the need for a future where tourism and heritage conservation drive economic growth, create opportunities for women and youth, and safeguard the state’s rich biodiversity.
Commending the initiative, Williams stated that the festival has the potential to transform local communities while preserving the beauty and wonder of the natural environment.
In his welcome address, the convener of the event, Chief Emmanuel Asu Abang, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in conservation.
“This is more than just a festival,” he said. “It is a vibrant expression of the Boki people’s identity—a celebration of our rich heritage and a powerful statement of our commitment as guardians of the critically endangered Cross River gorilla. This carnival blends our traditional dances, music, art, and our deep connection with the rainforest.”
As part of the event, 21 individuals from the state were honoured and recognized as Gorilla Champions for their contributions to wildlife conservation.
