CP Probes Alleged Police Brutality Against Akwa Ibom Poly Students
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Mohammed Azare, has ordered a full-scale investigation into allegations of police brutality and extortion levelled by students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
The directive follows a massive protest led by the President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Geoffrey George, on Monday.
The students stormed the streets of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, to decry the alleged harassment and exploitation by law enforcement officers.
In response, Azare met with student leaders and the school’s management in Uyo, and stressed the command’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring student safety.
“The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of police brutality and extortion raised by students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua,” Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated in a release on Tuesday.
The PPRO further said, “In a bid to address their concerns, the Commissioner of Police engaged the management of the school, Students’ Union Government (SUG) and other representatives in a peaceful dialogue aimed at fostering understanding and strengthening police-student relations.
“During the engagement, the Command reaffirmed its uncompromising dedication to upholding human rights and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including students.”
The CP condemned any unprofessional behaviour among officers and assured that those found guilty would face disciplinary action.
He urged students to maintain open communication with law enforcement, and pledged proactive measures to enhance security within the host community.
“The CP strongly condemned any acts of misconduct by police officers, emphasizing that any personnel found guilty of unprofessional behaviour would face disciplinary measures by the law.
“He used the occasion to emphasize the need for continuous collaboration between students and law enforcement agencies, encouraging open communication and trust-building efforts to ensure a more secure environment,”it added.
