The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a man, Obayemi Oyetade, to three months in prison for selling “Canadian Loud,” a strong variant of cannabis, as well as cannabis-laced chocolates and gummies.
Justice Deinde Dipeolu delivered the judgment on Monday after Oyetade admitted guilt to a three-count charge filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
According to NDLEA prosecutor, Julianna Negedu, Oyetade was apprehended on July 19, at Sarah Sam Hotel, Ogudu Road, Kosofe, Lagos, while peddling the banned substances.
At the point of arrest, operatives recovered 22.9 grams of Canadian Loud, 1.3 kilograms of Loud-infused chocolate, and 900 grams of gummies laced with the drug.
Negedu told the court that the offence violated Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
During the trial, Oyetade confessed that he had been selling illegal drugs since 2021. His defence counsel, Emmanuel Okenyi, pleaded for mercy, urging the court to impose a fine instead of jail time.
In his ruling, Justice Dipeolu sentenced Oyetade to three months’ imprisonment but gave him an option to pay a N1m fine.
