Corruption did not thrive under Buhari – Malami

Nigeria’s immediate past Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has pushed back against public criticism of Buhari’s anti-corruption legacy.

Appearing on Arise news on Tuesday night, Malami revealed that the late president did not let corruption to thrive during his tenure.

According to Malami: “During the period of President Muhammadu Buhari, corruption was not thriving at all,” Malami said firmly.

“If you talk of convictions associated with high-profile corruption cases, the government recorded convictions in thousands.”

The former AGF said, Nigeria recovered over $2 billion in looted funds during Buhari’s time in office.

He noted that the Buhari administration also ushered in structural reforms like the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN) to address financial leakages.

“He brought about the Single Treasury Account, which created a governance-wide visibility associated with funding the finances of the government,” he said.

Internationally, Buhari’s administration received accolades from institutions such as the African Union—which named him the continent’s anti-corruption champion—and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Malami revealed.

The former President, who passed on is being described as one of Nigeria’s anti-corruption leaders.
