COREN Sets Up 13-Member Committee To Review Act
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has inaugurated a Committee on the Amendment of the Engineers (Registration, etc.) Act (as Amended) 2018.
The inauguration, which took place on Tuesday at COREN Headquarters in Abuja, was aimed at strengthening engineering regulation in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the President of COREN, Professor Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, underscored the importance of the assignment, noting that the review of the Act is critical to aligning Nigeria’s engineering profession with global best practices.
He stressed that the exercise would ensure the profession remains responsive to emerging national and international realities.
The Committee is chaired by Engr. W. Kamila Maliki, with Engr. Ejikeme U. Mgbemena, FNSE, serving as Deputy Chairman.
Other members include seasoned engineering practitioners, legal experts, and stakeholders within the engineering ecosystem.

EngrKam-selem Alhaji Bukar; Hon. Umar U. Maikunkele; and Engr Cyril O. Onyeneke.
Others are: Prof. O.A. U. Uche; Barrister A. Amin; Barrister Folorunsho Oladoyin; Engr Andrew Francis Onyilo as Secretary; and Barrister Arowolo Aituaje Precious as Assistant Secretary.
The Terms of Reference (ToR) of the Committee mandate it to review the Engineers Act 2018, identify strengths and gaps, engage stakeholders across engineering and allied sectors, and benchmark findings against global best practices.
The Committee is also tasked with recommending amendments to enhance COREN’s regulatory powers, strengthen its disciplinary framework, ensure institutional autonomy, and provide sustainable support for initiatives such as the Engineering Residency Programme (ERP).
The Committee has been given three months to conclude its work and submit its final report.
According to the Registrar of COREN, Prof. O. A. U. Uche, the move reflects COREN’s commitment to safeguarding the practice of engineering in Nigeria by ensuring its regulatory instruments remain robust, forward-looking, and globally competitive.
