COREN Proposes N75,000 Stipend For Engineers’ Residency Programme

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has proposed a monthly stipend of N75,000 for graduate engineers enrolled in its soon-to-be-reintroduced Engineer Residency Programme.

The President of COREN, Professor Sadiq Abubakar, made this known during a press conference held on Monday in Abuja to announce the upcoming 33rd COREN Engineering Assembly, scheduled to take place from July 14 to 16 in Abuja.

According to Abubakar, the Engineer Residency Programme is being reintroduced as part of efforts to strengthen engineering practice in Nigeria and ensure that graduates acquire the practical, hands-on skills required to compete globally.

“Are we going to have some stipend? Yes, there’s going to be stipend around it. We have packaged it; we have developed a series of documents, a manual and about four other key documents.

“We are inaugurating a task force, chaired by eminent Nigerians, to champion the reintroduction of the residency programme in the country.

“We want to engage the government so that we’ll be able to have the framework for funding, sustainable funding, so that when we come back to it, we will not get out of it again.

“I think what we recommended is about 75,000, per candidate who is serving residency. But these are things that until we conclude and we finalize with the government”, he said.

Abubakar described the engineer residency and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posting as two critical years in the formative stage of every Nigerian engineer.

On the 33rd COREN Engineering Assembly, Abubakar, said the three-day event will focus on key issues affecting the engineering profession, particularly remuneration, conditions of service, professionalism, and compliance.

This year’s theme for the programme is: “Advancing Quality Engineering Services and Businesses in Nigeria: Professionalism, Compliance and Remunerations.”

According to him, the keynote address will be delivered by Professor Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo, SAN, former Vice President of Nigeria and a respected legal scholar and administrator.

Abubakar said, “This will be followed by a workshop aimed at building consensus on remuneration and fee structures for engineering services in Nigeria.

“The session will be led by Senator Iyiola Omisore, with participation from engineering professional bodies such as ACEN, academia from universities and technical institutions, industrialists, and key stakeholders from bodies like MAN, FOCI, NUC, NBTE, and ITF”.
