Club World Cup: Why Real Madrid will not play third-place match
There will be no third-place match at the 2025 Club World Cup.
That means that both Real Madrid and Fluminense will leave the United States before this weekend.
Madrid suffered a 4-0 defeat in the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in their semi-final clash, while Chelsea beat Fluminense 2-0.
These results means PSG will face Chelsea in the final on Sunday.
In other major tournaments, teams that lose their semi-final games also face off for a bronze medal.
But FIFA said in a statement: “There will be no third-place match, or bronze final, at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
“For the inaugural edition of this elite global competition, FIFA decided not to include this match to ensure that clubs and players who do not make the final can transition to their next commitments as soon as possible.”
