Clan leaders intervene as Abia LG Chairman, councillors’ face-off deepens
The rift between the Executive Chairman of Umunnochi LGA of Abia State and some elected councillors has reared its head again, creating fresh administrative tension.
The aggrieved councillors, led by Chukwu Obiageri Nkeiruka, accuse the local government chairman, Sunday Efurobi, of not allowing them to perform their functions, harassing them, among other claims.
Following the crises, the Council of Umunnochi Presidents-General has called on the councillors to support the local government chairman for good governance and not to play dirty politics.
The Council of Presidents-General from Isuochi, Umuchieze, and Nneato, in a statement signed by Ochiabuto Orji on their behalf, regretted that the actions of councillors on July 17, 2025, projected Umunnochi as the home of lawlessness.
But reacting to the Presidents-General’s statement, Chukwu Obiageri Nkeiruka, who spoke on behalf of the aggrieved councillors, accused the clan PGs of taking selfish and clannish positions on the matter.
He alleged that the Finance and General Purpose Committee has not been constituted, eight months after they were sworn into office, among other complaints.
DAILY POST recalls that in February 2025, a fake resignation letter purported to have been written by local government chairman, Sunday Efurobi, circulated on social media, creating fear and panic.
But the council boss promptly made a public statement disowning the fake resignation letter.
He blamed his detractors for masterminding the fake resignation letter.
