China supports recognition of Palestine as sovereign state

China has agreed to join the New York Declaration, which supports the recognition of Palestine as an independent nation, the Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday.

With the Palestinian question at the core of the Middle East issue, the Chinese government believes that the implementation of the two-State solution “is the only viable solution.”

China’s endorsement of the New York Declaration is in line with its consistent position on the matter, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a news conference.

Jiakun reiterated the Chinese support of all efforts that are conducive to the political settlement of Israel-Palestine, assuring of the country’s willingness to continue to work with the international community.

China stressed that it wants an end to the fighting in Gaza, the deescalation of the humanitarian crisis, and the implementation of the two-State solution.

The New York Declaration of July 2025, endorsed by 19 countries, including those part of two entities, lays out a 15-month phased plan for a demilitarized and sovereign Palestine.

The Palestinian Authority, it proposes, will govern Palestine, while a United Nations peacekeeping mission would be formed to provide security to Palestinians during the transition period.

The nations in support of the independent state are Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, and Turkey.

The rest include Norway, Japan, Qatar, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the Arab League, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

However, the Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, is vehemently opposed to the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state, a hardline position supported by the United States.

On Thursday in Ecuador, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio faulted Western countries’ resolution to recognize a Palestinian state, warning that Israel may respond by annexing the West Bank.
