Catholic Bishop Yola elected first Vice President of African bishops association

The Catholic Bishop of Yola, Most Reverend Stephen Mamza, has been elected the first Vice President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, SECAM.

Mamza who is the immediate past Adamawa State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, was elected during the 20th SECAM Plenary Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, where African bishops convened to discuss the Church’s mission.

A Congolese prelate and archbishop of Kinshaha, Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo was elected President while Most Rev. José Manuel Imbamba, the Bishop of Dundo in Angola, became the Second Vice President, with Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, the Bishop of Keta-Akatsi in Ghana to serve as treasurer.

Rev. Fr. Rafael Simbine Junior from Mozambique retains his position as Secretary General, while Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina of Nigeria will serve as Deputy Secretary General.

Bishop Mamza’s election as first vice president of SECAM was received by members of the clergy, laity, and parishioners in the Yola Catholic Diocese with enthusiasm.

They congratulated him and and expressed optimism that he will excel in his new role.
