Cardoso Discusses Nigeria's Monetary Future Ahead of 2025 IMF, World Bank Group Spring Meetings

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, participated in a significant dialogue with distinguished economist Dr. James Robinson during a recent policy forum examining Nigeria’s monetary strategies and international financial engagement.

The event featured Dr. Robinson, the Reverend Richard L. Pearson Professor at the University of Chicago and Director of the Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts.

According to a statement shared via the CBN’s official X account on Saturday, their conversation explored the trajectory of economic reforms in Nigeria, bringing together leading policymakers and financial specialists.

During the session, Governor Cardoso emphasised the central bank’s commitment to implementing rigorous and transparent monetary policies.

“We inherited a crisis of confidence, but we chose a different path. We’re not turning back,” Cardoso said, drawing nods from participants, including global finance leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora.

The discussion began with introductory remarks from Tal Cohen, President of Nasdaq. The event brought together various Nigerian professionals alongside international economic figures. Proceedings were moderated by Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, Adviser on Stakeholder Engagement at the CBN, while Temi Popoola, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Exchange Group, facilitated audience questions.

Concluding remarks on the bank’s strategic direction were delivered by Dr. Olubukola Akinniyi Akinwunmi, Director of the Banking Supervision Department at the CBN.

The gathering was further enriched by the participation of several members of the CBN’s board and Monetary Policy Committee, including Mr. Robert Agbede, Prof. Melvin Ayogu, and Dr. Aloysius Ordu. Their involvement underscored the institution’s commitment to incorporating insights from Nigerian experts in the diaspora.

Throughout the forum, discussions centred on Nigeria’s ongoing monetary reform initiatives and the CBN’s efforts to restore market confidence. Governor Cardoso referred to these efforts as “orthodox policy choices” aimed at promoting long-term economic stability.
