Business Centre Operators Count Gains As Applicants Scramble For UNN Jobs
Business centre operators in and around the University of Nigeria campuses of Nsukka and Enugu are counting their profits as hundreds of job applicants scramble to submit job application forms.
The nation’s foremost university had published many job vacancies on Wednesday, comprising academic and non-academic positions. The applications require both online and hard copy modalities.
“Online is not the headache,” revealed Nonso Ogbonna, an applicant. According to him, “Our major challenge is the hard copy. Applicants are told to submit twenty-five copies of their applications and the supporting documents. Some are photocopying in bits. We were given three weeks from the date of the publication, which was this Wednesday. I don’t know why we need to submit twenty-five copies of the application, but there is no option.”
Sabinus Okeke said, “Those that make money are business centre operators. I went to one of them at Garriki. I was told to print a copy of my application at N300 each. I switched to IMT where it’s cheaper. Photocopying at Garriki is N100 per page. But other places are cheaper.”
Paulinus runs a business centre at IMT. He said, “The cost of papers is high. The ink is also skyrocketing. We charge according to the dictations of the market. We are not the cause of the inflation; it has become a national trend. We however reduce the costs when there is a public power supply, otherwise, it will surely be higher. You and I know the cost of petrol since Tinubu came on board.”
A stationery dealer, Malachy Ukpor, said, “The sales have improved since UNN advertised job vacancies. Envelopes are on high demand. Printing papers are also being ordered. Things have really improved.”
It was gathered that UNN has not employed officially for over ten years despite retiring many of its staff members while some also died.
