Former President Muhammadu Buhari has relocated to his residence in Kaduna after spending two years in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, at the end of his second term in May 2023.

The former president, who had previously stated his intention to stay “as far away from Abuja as possible” after leaving office, was accompanied to Kaduna by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other dignitaries.

The entourage included Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, as well as current and former Deputy Governors of Katsina State, a former Inspector General of Police, former ministers, and several of his aides.

“In Kaduna, the former president was met with a warm reception from well-wishers, who were also received by Mallam Mamman Daura, Musa Halilu (Dujiman Adamawa), and Bashir Ahmad, who gathered to welcome him back,” said Buhari’s former Special Assistant on Digital Communications, Bashir Ahmad, who shared photos of the ex-president’s arrival to Kaduna on Facebook.

Before leaving office, Buhari had been clear about his post-presidency plans.

During a Christmas homage by FCT residents in December 2022, he stated, “I have promised a lot of my colleagues that I will try and be as far away as possible from Abuja when I leave the office so that nobody can create any problem for me anymore.

“I will be in Daura, which is on the border with the Niger Republic, and I think in spite of technology, I will be safe enough there.”

He added, “…I will happily retire according to the provisions of the constitution of the country and go back home.”

True to his word, Buhari retreated to Daura following the conclusion of his second term, where he maintained a low profile for almost two years.
