BREAKING: Tinubu Sacks New Uniabuja VC, Dissolves Governing Council, Others

President Bola Tinubu has removed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, and dissolved its governing council.
The termination of Maikudi’s appointment comes barely a month after she was named the institution’s seventh substantive vice-chancellor.
She had assumed the role on January 1, 2025, following a selection process where she emerged as the top candidate among 10 contenders.
Her appointment had been scheduled for a non-renewable five-year term.
Professor Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed as Maikudi’s replacement in acting capacity for a six-month term, with the stipulation that she will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.
Senator Lanre Tejuoso, who previously served as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, will take over as Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu also approved leadership changes across several federal universities.
At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu has been removed as Acting Vice-Chancellor before his scheduled February 14 tenure completion.
Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam will serve as his replacement for six months. He’s ineligible for a permanent position.
Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who announced the changes in a statement, said the presidential directive also includes pro-chancellor reassignments.
Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been moved from UNN to the University of Uyo, while Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo takes over at UNN.
Senator Joy Emordi was redeployed to the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and Senator Sani Stores will becom Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
Maikudi, a professor of International Law, had previously served as acting vice-chancellor since July 2024.
Her appointment as substantive vice-chancellor had been controversial, with external governing council members boycotting a meeting in December 2024, citing concerns about the selection process.
