Brazilian Police Foil Bomb Plot At Lady Gaga Concert
Brazilian authorities have thwarted a planned bomb attack targeting pop icon Lady Gaga’s historic open-air concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, which drew an estimated 2.1 million people.
According to the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, the plot was organized by a group spreading hate speech and promoting radicalisation among teenagers through violent and self-harming content.
Investigations revealed the group aimed to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails.
According to the police, Some of the suspects even posed as Gaga’s own fanbase, the “Little Monsters,” to lure in minors and encourage extremist behavior online.
The police operation, executed in coordination with Brazil’s justice ministry, was initiated after a cyber operations lab flagged suspicious activity based on intelligence from Rio state police.
Authorities uncovered digital cells using coded language and extremist symbols to radicalize vulnerable youths.
Law enforcement executed over a dozen search and seizure warrants. The alleged ringleader was arrested in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul for illegal firearm possession, while a teenager in Rio was taken into custody for possession of child pornography.
Despite the security threat, the concert proceeded without incident on Saturday night and marked the biggest performance of Lady Gaga’s career.
Funded by the city government in order to revive the local economy, the free two-hour show attracted 500,000 tourists, estimated to have injected about £80 million into Rio’s economy, nearly 30% more than Madonna’s similar beach performance in 2024.
Taking the stage for the first time in Brazil since 2012, Gaga opened her set with a powerful operatic rendition of “Bloody Mary” before moving into newer hits like “Abracadabra” from her March 2025 album Mayhem. She followed with fan favorites including “Poker Face” and “Born This Way.”
Speaking in both English and through a Portuguese translator, Gaga addressed the crowd: “Brazil! I missed you. I missed you so much,” she said.
“Tonight we’re making history, but no one makes history alone. Thank you for waiting more than 10 years for me,” she added.
Gaga revealed that her absence was due to years spent healing from fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that had previously forced her to cancel tour dates in 2017 and 2018.
The crowd was filled with passionate fans who had traveled from across Brazil and beyond. Many had arrived at the beach at sunrise to secure a front-row view, despite the concert beginning at 9:45 p.m.
With over 4,800 security personnel, including military police, firefighters, and local forces, stationed across the venue, the event started safely.
It builds on Rio’s legacy of hosting massive beach concerts, dating back to Rod Stewart’s 1994 show that attracted four million people, still a Guinness World Record.
The city has announced that these major free concerts will continue annually until at least 2028, always held in May to boost tourism during the economic low season.
