BOTCHED MATCH: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria, Libya fined $50,000
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria three points and three goals and fined Libya $50,000 for the aborted AFCON 2025 qualifier between the two countries.
The African Football Governing Body (CAF) made the announcement to punish Libya for their unsportsmanlike behavior in a statement that was issued on Saturday afternoon.
Following a careful examination by the Disciplinary Committee, the decision, which carries a $50,000 punishment, firmly establishes Nigeria’s standing in the qualifiers.
In their match-day three encounter in Uyo the capital of Akwa Ibom State, the Super Eagles overcame Libya by a slim margin thanks to a single goal at Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
They then travelled to Libya where the match-day four fixture was billed to be held only for the Nigerian contingent to be detained at the airport without food, water, and internet.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria had a terrifying experience when they arrived in Libya for the AFCON qualifier as they were abandoned at the Al Abraq Airport for several hours.
The crew spent the entire night without adequate treatment since the chartered flight carrying the team was diverted to a small airstrip in Al Abaq, Libya rather than landing in Benghazi, where they were originally supposed to land as scheduled.
The Super Eagles made their way back home after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) withdrew from the match moments after the Libyan Football Federation denied any role in the players’ and officials’ mistreatment.
