Boniface Returns To Germany After Medical Concern Stalls AC Milan Move
Super Eagles star Victor Boniface has returned to Germany after medical concerns stalled his proposed move to AC Milan from Bayer Leverkusen.
Boniface travelled to Italy ahead of a loan move to AC Milan until the end of the season, however, there are concerns about his fitness.
The 24-year-old underwent several tests at La Madonnina clinic and Galeazzi Hospital in Milan over the past 48 hours, but was sent back to Germany.
He has previously struggled with a right knee injury in 2019 and 2020 and missed several games last season due to muscle issues.
The results prompted Milan to take additional time before deciding on the transfer.
Milan sporting director Paolo Tare confirmed the club’s decision on Sunday.
He said: “There were no extra medicines. We knew that he had problems in the past; we are evaluating everything as planned with regard to the health and fitness of the player. His qualities are undoubted. We are just trying to make the right decision for this situation.”
Similarly, Transfer Expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed on Sunday that Boniface is back in Germany amid uncertainty.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, it is increasingly likely that Milan will abandon the move.
He wrote on X: “After medical tests at AC Milan, Victor Boniface returns to Germany, as there’s still no green light to his move. After 48 hours in Milano, Boniface will be back in Leverkusen today, waiting for AC Milan’s imminent decision.”
AC Milan and Leverkusen had earlier agreed a €5 million loan fee and a €24 million purchase option for the Super Eagles forward.
The Rossoneri are in the market for a striker after losing Alvaro Morata and Tammy Abraham this summer.
Boniface joined Bayer Leverkusen from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in August 2022, and he played a key role in leading the team to the Bundesliga title in 2024.
He scored 11 goals, and provided two assists in 27 competitive games for Bayer Leverkusen last season.
