Blackout Looms In Abuja As TCN Relocates Transmission Towers

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Friday announced a planned power outage due to the ongoing Federal Capital Development Agency (FCDA) road dualization project along the Apo axis of Abuja.

A statement issued by TCN’s Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, said the project necessitates the relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV transmission towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line, specifically situated on the Outer Southern Expressway route.

The statement stated further that the relocation work, which is set to begin on Monday, January 6, 2025, and continues through Monday, January 20, 2025, will take place daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

During this period, the company added that it would dismantle and reconstruct the towers, as well as restoring power cables, which are critical to restoring bulk electricity supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from the Gwagwalada Substation.

As a result of the construction, TCN noted that residents and businesses in several areas within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will experience rationed power supply.

Affected locations include Kubwa, Karu, Mararaba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and Apo Mechanic. Additionally, parts of Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and the Alaita axis will be impacted.

TCN, while apologising for the inconvenience this power interruption may cause, explained that the relocation of the towers is essential for the completion of the road project.

The company assured residents that efforts will be made to expedite the work and restore power as soon as the relocation and cable restringing processes are completed.

TCN urged affected electricity consumers, particularly those served by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), to remain patient during this critical period of infrastructure adjustment.
