Billionaire Dangote Set to Boosts Nigerian Government’s CNG revolution With $280m
Aliko Dangote, the president and CEO of the Dangote Group, has stated his support for President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to switch from petroleum products to compressed natural gas (CNG) for energy.
The investment was announced at an Abuja event by Arvind Pathak, Group Managing Director (GMD) of Dangote Cement, who also highlighted the company’s commitment to the sustainable energy transition.
President Tinubu has called CNG transportation a “economic necessity” and underlined the importance of using Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources in the transportation industry. Recently, the president issued an order to distribute one million free commercial vehicle CNG conversion kits.
An important step in reducing climate change and promoting a low-carbon economy is Dangote Cement’s investment.
The business is developing its infrastructure for CNG fuelling in order to guarantee dependable access for its expanding fleet.
Newsng understands that the move is consistent with the company’s backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s CNG Initiative, which aims to provide more affordable, sustainable energy alternatives and move Nigeria towards a low-carbon economy.
Pathajsaid: “This move marks a significant milestone in Dangote’s clean energy transition, to operate most of its fleet on CNG by mid-2026,” Pathak stated.
“By mid-2026, Dangote Cement aims to operate a fleet predominantly powered by CNG.”
According to Pathak, the company has acquired 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks as of October and anticipates receiving another 1,600, for a total of 3,100 trucks by the end of the year.
Newsng learnt that this commitment is demonstrated by the CNG station in Obajana, which can refill more than 3,000 trucks. A second station is presently being developed in Ibese to further enhance fleet operations.
We earlier reported that the Federal Government of Nigeria has begun crude oil sales to the Dangote Refinery and other local refineries from October 1, 2024.
