Biden Slams Trump’s Ukraine Peace Push As ‘Modern-Day Appeasement’

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has slammed President Donald Trump’s approach to ending the war in Ukraine, calling it “modern-day appeasement” and warning it would only strengthen Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4 on Monday, Biden criticized the Trump administration’s push for Ukraine to give up territory in exchange for peace.

“Anybody that thinks he (Putin) is going to stop” if some territory is conceded as part of a peace deal “is just foolish”, Biden said.

The Trump administration officials, including Vice-President JD Vance and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, have backed a peace plan that freezes current battle lines and effectively accepting Russia’s control over parts of Ukraine.

Vance said both countries would “have to give up some of the territory they currently own,” while Hegseth called pre-2014 borders “unrealistic.”

Biden called this appeasement and warned it could destroy U.S. credibility with allies.

“Europe is going to lose confidence in the certainty of America and its leadership,” he said.

He also hit back at Trump’s foreign policy, mocking his past comments about taking back the Panama Canal, buying Greenland, and making Canada the 51st state.

“What the hell’s going on here? That’s not who we are,” Biden said, adding “We’re about freedom, democracy—not confiscation.”

Biden defended his own Ukraine record, saying his administration gave Kyiv “everything they needed” to fight off Russia’s invasion and was ready to escalate support if needed.

Asked about his late withdrawal from the 2024 race, Biden said: “It was a hard decision… but the right one.”

Meanwhile, Trump has claimed he is spearheading a much-needed transformation in how the world engages with the U.S., focusing on rebalancing trade, curbing illegal immigration, and improving government efficiency.

He marked his first 100 days in office with a celebratory speech last week, framing his actions as a bold reset.

Biden, however, dismissed Trump’s claim of a triumphant start to his second term, stating, “I’ll let history judge that. I don’t see anything that was triumphant.”
