Turkish League side Besiktas have confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is expected to be out of action for a while after sustaining an injury while on international duty with Nigeria.
Ndidi suffered a thigh injury in the 1-1 draw against South Africa on Tuesday, and he was replaced by Crystal Palace’s new signing, Christantus Uche in the 72nd minute.
The Super Eagles midfielder has only played two matches for the club since joining in the summer from Leicester City.
Besiktas took to their website to confirm Ndidi’s injury while also stating that he has started treatment.
The statement read: “Our player, Wilfred Ndidi, who was unable to play due to an injury sustained during the Nigerian national team’s match against South Africa, has returned to Turkey.
“An evaluation and an MRI performed at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital revealed a strain and bleeding in the posterior thigh muscle (semimembranosus). Our medical team has begun treatment for our player.”
The 28-year-old will miss Besiktas’ clash against İstanbul Başakşehir on Saturday.
Ndidi is the second Super Eagles player to sustain injury in the September international break after Victor Osimhen suffered an ankle injury against Rwanda, which ruled him out of the South Africa game.
Ndidi captained the Super Eagles to a 1-0 victory against Rwanda last Saturday, and he has been a key player for the team since making his debut in 2015 against DR Congo.
He has made 66 appearances for Nigeria but he is yet to open his goalscoring account for the Super Eagles.
