Accident

A tragic accident on Wednesday evening claimed the life of a two-year-old girl after a Vannette bus rammed into pedestrians at the Ring Road area of Benin City, Edo State.

The child’s mother sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, CSP Moses Yamu, Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, said the accident occurred around 5:30 p.m.

He revealed that the driver of the Vannette bus was allegedly attempting to evade arrest by members of the Edo State Public Safety Response team when the incident took place.

“Following the accident, an angry mob descended on a member of the public safety response team, accusing him of being responsible for the tragedy,” Yamu said.

However, officers from the Esigie Divisional Headquarters who intervened rescued the embattled officer and took him into custody for questioning.

The police have since launched a full-scale investigation to arrest the driver, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.

“Law enforcement officers have also gathered pictorial evidence and other records to determine the exact cause of the crash,” Yamu added.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Betty Otimenyin, urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules and cooperate with law enforcement authorities to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

“Patience on the road is essential. Every road user has a duty to protect lives by adhering to safety protocols,” Otimenyin emphasised.

Yamu further assured the public that justice would be served, and all those responsible for the accident would be held accountable.
