Bayern Munich Sign Bayer Leverkusen Defender
Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah on a free transfer.
The German defender ended his association with Bayer Leverkusen to sign a four-year deal with the Bundesliga Champions.
The 29-year-old spent 10 years at Bayer Leverkusen, leading the club to the Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2024.
He was linked with the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Real Madrid after he opted not to sign a new contract.
Bayern Munich confirmed Tah’s signing with a statement on their website on Thursday.
“In Tah, we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, said: “It’s no secret that we’ve had Jonathan Tah on our radar for a long time.
“We appreciate his quality: he’s a character who takes on responsibility. Jonathan had a lot of offers but chose Bayern, which pleases us very much.”
Christoph Freund, sporting director, said: “In Jonathan Tah, we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality, who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence.
“He’ll be a good and important addition for us with his technical qualities as well as his manner and the way he leads.”
Tah was delighted to join Bayern Munich, and he has expressed his desire to be successful at the Allianz Arena.
He said: “I’m very happy to be at Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”
Tah is expected to wear the number four shirt, and he will make his debut for the club at the FIFA World Club Cup where Bayern Munich will take on Auckland City, Boca Juniors, and Benfica.
