Banditry: Katsina death toll hits 50

The lawmaker representing Malumfashi Constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Ibrahim, says no fewer than 50 people have been killed in a wave of fresh bandit attacks in his constituency.

He revealed that 30 worshippers were shot dead and another 20 burnt alive in separate incidents across Malumfashi Local Government Area.

Ibrahim, visibly distressed, informed colleagues during plenary that the attacks occurred in Gidan Adamu Mantau, Unguwar Yar Mai Dabo, and Makera villages in Karfi Ward, as well as Burdigau community in Yaba Ward. According to him, residents now live in constant fear.

He explained that villagers had earlier reported suspicious movements of armed men around Burdigau between 6 and 7 p.m. on Monday, but soldiers arrived late and later withdrew without securing the area. By dawn Tuesday, the bandits struck.

The lawmaker lamented, “The situation has become unbearable. Our people can no longer live in their villages because of these relentless attacks.”

He appealed for permanent security bases to be established in Karfi and Yaba wards.

The killings have drawn concern among fellow lawmakers over the rising death toll in Katsina communities despite military presence. Locals describe the situation as a “daily war of survival.”

Bandits hadearlier stormed Unguwan Mantau community on Tuesday morning, killing 13 worshippers during prayers.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, confirmed to journalists that the government had moved to reinforce security and provide relief support.

According to him, “The incident occurred when criminal elements launched a reprisal attack on the community.

The Muslim members of the community were praying in the mosque during the Fajr prayer when the criminal element started shooting sporadically in the mosque.”
