ASUU-UNIPORT Elects New Leadership As Professor Chima Hands Over

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has inaugurated a new Executive Committee (EXCO) led by Professor O.O. Ngwoke as the new Branch Chairperson.
This development follows the election held on June 5, 2025, which was reportedly successful and seamless.
After the election, the outgoing Chairperson, Professor Uzoma Chima, handed over to Professor Ngwoke.
He expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to lead the union over the past four years.
During his tenure, Professor Chima had fought for several pressing issues affecting the university’s academic staff, including unpaid promotion arrears and poor working conditions.
The new EXCO, led by Professor Ngwoke, will likely build on the efforts of the previous administration to improve the welfare of academic staff and address long-standing challenges facing the university.
The ASUU-UNIPORT branch has been vocal about issues affecting the university, including the sacking of lecturers and withholding of students’ results over disputes with the university management.
Meanwhile, the successful election and inauguration of the new EXCO mark a new chapter for the union, as they work together to tackle the challenges facing the university and its staff.
