Aruna To Battle Nine Players For $270,000 Table Tennis Prize
Nigeria’s King of Table Tennis, Aruna Quadri, has been selected to participate in the first edition of the WTT Contender Chennai in India as he battles with other players to win the $270,000 prize money.
Aruna was picked to replace German star Dimitrij Ovtcharov, and he is set to battle nine other players for the prestigious tournament.
The tournament is set to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai, India, from March 25 to 30.
Egypt’s Omar Assar is the other African player selected for the tournament; the likes of Denmark’s Jonathan Groth (17), Hugo Calderano of Brazil (6) and world number four Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan are also expected to feature.
Aruna has not enjoyed the best of starts in 2025, failing to impress in the two WTT tournaments he has featured in this year.
He suffered a semi-final exit to Japanese sensation Tomokazu Harimoto in the WTT Star Contender in Doha in January.
The 36-year-old crashed out of the WTT Champions Chongqing 2025 following a 3-0 defeat to Wang Chuqin of China in their round-of-32 encounter.
Aruna will be hoping to go a step further in India to stand a chance of getting closer to the prize money.
The WTT Contest in Chennai, India, is the fifth WTT event of the year; it is also the first time it will be hosted in the city.
Aruna is the first African player to be ranked in the top 10 in the world.
