The Nigerian Army on Sunday confirmed that the suicide bomb attack in Konduga, Borno State, on Friday, June 20, 2025, was orchestrated by Boko Haram insurgents.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division and Commander Sector 1, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, disclosed this in a statement signed by Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Ajemasu Jingina.

THE WHISTLER had earlier reported that at least ten people were confirmed dead and 18 others injured in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2025, following a suicide bombing carried out by a female attacker at a busy fish market.

However, the Army later confirmed that the number of casualties had risen to 16 and described the suicide bombers as “the last kick of a dying horse.”

Brigadier General Unachukwu said the Army had commiserated with the people of Konduga Local Government Area following the devastating attack.

“The attack, claimed by Boko Haram insurgents, killed at least 16 people and left several others injured,” he noted.

“This is the last kick of a dying horse,” the GOC stated, adding that “such tactics are often employed by insurgents when they can no longer mount direct attacks on security forces.”

Although the identity of the female suicide bomber remains unknown, the GOC visited Konduga during an operational tour of the 26 Task Force Brigade, Gwoza, to sympathise with victims and their families.

He assured residents that troops, alongside other security agencies, had cordoned off and thoroughly scanned the affected area to prevent further attacks and restore public confidence.

He urged residents to maintain trust in the military’s efforts and assured them that the Army was taking every necessary measure to protect lives and secure communities.

In his words: “We are dedicated to defeating the enemies of peace and stability, and we will continue to work with other security agencies and stakeholders to achieve this noble goal within the shortest possible time.”

He also called on Borno State residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.

“We will get through this together, and we will emerge stronger and more resilient than ever,” the GOC concluded.
