APC youths demand competence over politics in chairmanship race

As internal jostling begins ahead of the 2027 elections, a frontline political advocacy group under the aegis of All Progressive Congress, APC, Youth Solidarity Network for Progressive Change has urged party leaders to prioritise merit and strategic leadership in selecting the next National Chairman.

The Network for Progressive Change, in a statement signed by its National President, Gideon Oche, also called on President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio to support Senator Mohammed Sani Musa for the role, citing the need for credible and capable leadership within the party’s national structure.

According to the statement, the party’s continued dominance in Nigerian politics will depend not only on policies but on the strength and foresight of its internal leadership.

The APC youth group argued that the choice of National Chairman must be informed by competence, party-building capacity, and an understanding of Nigeria’s complex political architecture.

Oche said President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio, as leaders of the party, must play a unifying role in steering the APC towards a credible internal succession process that will inspire confidence ahead of the next elections.

The president of the youth group believed Senator Musa’s legislative experience and involvement in key committees—such as finance, electoral reform, and technology—position him as a leader who can drive reform and restore internal cohesion.

He reiterated that the choice of chairman should not be based on political favoritism or elite arrangements, warning that such moves could harm the APC’s structure and public credibility ahead of the next general elections.

Oche further described Senator Musa as a figure who bridges generational gaps and understands the complexities of Nigeria’s political system, adding that the party requires a stabilizing force to maintain its relevance.

“We are making this patriotic call with the deepest sense of urgency. Senator Sani Musa is not just a ranking senator; he is a party man with deep institutional memory, strong political values, and a clear understanding of how to navigate the future. He combines the idealism of the younger generation with the wisdom and restraint of elder statesmen,” Oche said.

“2027 is not as far away as it seems. The next National Chairman of the APC will either lead this party into a new era of strategic coherence or preside over its decline. We believe Senator Mohammed Sani Musa is the kind of figure who can inspire cohesion, renew confidence in the party, and restore credibility to the APC’s national secretariat,” the statement reads.

The statement urged the APC leadership to embrace a transparent and forward-thinking succession process, noting that decisions made now will shape the party’s future trajectory.
