The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed shock and sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari at the age of 82.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described Buhari’s death as a monumental loss to Nigeria, while hailing him as an “enigmatic leader, iconic elder-statesman, and exemplary patriot” whose life of discipline, resilience, and service will be remembered for generations.
“Until his passing, Buhari led a simple but exceptional life of service to our dear nation. From his leadership at the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), to serving as a military Head of State, and later as a two-term democratic President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, he has left behind a solid and awe-inspiring legacy,” the statement read.
The APC acknowledged the late President’s unique political trajectory, noting that despite his military background, he emerged as a pivotal figure in the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy.
“He was an unlikely democrat, yet became one of the most influential contributors to the strengthening and consolidation of our democratic system,” the party said.
Buhari, who once ran on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), later founded the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). His CPC merged with other political parties to form the APC in 2013 — a political realignment that would prove historic.
The APC recalled Buhari’s landmark electoral victory in 2015 when, under its platform, he became the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting Nigerian President, a feat that further cemented his political legacy.
On behalf of the Acting National Chairman, Hon. Bukar Dalori, the National Working Committee (NWC), party members, and stakeholders, the APC extended condolences to Buhari’s immediate family, President Bola Tinubu, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
“May the Almighty Allah grant his soul Aljannatul Firdaus. Amen,” the statement added.
Buhari, a native of Daura in Katsina State, served Nigeria in multiple capacities and was regarded for his spartan lifestyle, anti-corruption stance, and unwavering patriotism.
