Another corpse of suspected thief found in Calabar

Another corpse of a young man whose identity was not immediately known, was found early Wednesday morning in the Mbukpa-Eyo Ita axis in Calabar, Cross River State capital.

This will be the second corpse in about a week found in Calabar.

The other was found decomposing around the Marian axis of the same metropolis last week.

Early risers in Mbukpa were stunned to notice the body of the young man with bruises and blood.

Eyewitnesses said the body may be that of a suspected thief who must have been overpowered by neighborhood boys.

They expressed worry that activities of criminals in the area were rising and endangering their lives and properties.

Residents have said that rising cases of dumped corpses may also be linked to alleged criminal activities of young men called Iron Condemned.

“Those called ‘Iron Condemned’ are reported to have terrorized homes by carting away their electric wires, soup pots, aluminum cans, metals, including household items like old tv, etc”, said a youth leader, Etetim Young.

On the act of jungle justice, another eyewitness, Agnes Akpan said “people do not have much confidence in the police because sometimes when suspects are handed over to them, the criminals are released soon enough.”

“And the lives of those that handed them to the police are endangered when they’re released”, she explained.

Irene Ugbo, Police PRO said they have several times cautioned the public against taking the laws into their hands by committing jungle justice, saying the act is criminal.

“We don’t encourage jungle justice in any way. Suspects must always be handed over to police authorities for legal reprimand, not killing them. What if they kill innocent persons?” She queried.
