Angry Mob Razes Ondo Police Station Over Suspect’s Death

Angry youths in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, have burnt down a police station following the controversial death of a suspect in police custody.

The victim, Tobi Bobade, allegedly died while in police detention.

This sparked outrage among residents who stormed the station and set it ablaze.

While protestors claim Bobade was tortured to death, the police maintained he died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The Ondo State Police Commissioner, Wilfred Afolabi, has ordered an investigation into the suspect’s death and subsequent attack on the police facility.

“All those responsible for this criminal act will face the full weight of the law,” Afolabi declared on Sunday.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, the incident originated from a February 15 dispute between two families on Ogbomo Street, Ifon.

Police officers from the Ifon division, led by an inspector, responded to the altercation and made several arrests, while some suspects fled the scene.

Odunlami revealed that Bobade was brought to the station in a deteriorating condition by a man identified as Mr. Losilosi.

“He appeared weak and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment,” she said.

“His remains have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, for a post-mortem examination.

“While officers were still at the station, an angry mob, allegedly led by the deceased’s father, attacked the station and set it on fire.

“The administrative office, the DPO’s office, the station store, and two exhibit vehicles were destroyed in the inferno caused by the mob,” Odunlami stated.

The attack on the police station was allegedly led by Bobade’s father.

The command said its administrative office, Division Police Officer’s office, station store, and two exhibit vehicles were destroyed in the fire.

However, no casualties were reported during the incident.
